Gwenn Hutchinson has waited years for a second chance. Her first love, Steven, has inexplicably returned, yet he is more focused on a forced happy ending than their actual relationship. She struggles with acceptance when she realizes her younger sister will be happily married before she ever sorts out her feelings for Steven or the new man in her life, Daniel. Gwenn must confront long hidden truths and decide what she’s willing to sacrifice—even though it could cost her everything.
Newly engaged to Annie, her rock-star girlfriend, Rachel Hutchinson is blissfully in love. But with Annie on tour while she’s stuck in Duluth, their long-distance romance is becoming difficult to maintain. To complicate matters, Rachel’s unpredictable mother is teetering between life and death.
Matriarch Shirley Hutchinson is gravely ill and looking for a miracle. Will the daughters she has persecuted for decades come to her aid or become her downfall?
♦ I always hate it when the last book in a series doesn’t end the way I had been imagining. Sadly I did not enjoy Finally My Favorite as much as I enjoyed the first two in the series. The first two, while tackling some series issues such as homophobia and PTSD were still light hearted and fun. I was rooting for the sisters to get their happy endings in this one and as I was reading I began to just want them to stop. Between wedding planning for Rachel, and Gwenn vacillating between Daniel and Steven, they were also being kind of horrible to everyone around them. They were so wrapped up in their own sense of right and wrong they damaged relationships and forever altered their family. And yet that was supposed to be the happily ever after ending. I was disappointed in the actions they took so I couldn’t be as happy with the ending as I would have liked. The world created, pacing and side characters were still great; it was just the drama issues that pulled it down for me.
◊ Favorite lines from chapter 24 – “I would love to live inside your head for a day. Is it all rainbows and unicorns?” “I’ve always been a pegasus girl. I think it’s a lesbian thing… no horns!” “Oh, shit, you are the best.” Gwenn laughed until her cheeks hurt, wiped some joyful teardrops from the corners of her eyes and picked up her overnight bag.
¤ Biggest cliché – “I will do anything for my happy, screw everyone around me.”
