After losing her marriage, life savings, and waistline, Autumn Kovac is terrified of being hit by more heartache. So when her only child decides to try out for the football team, the overprotective, sports-illiterate mom has a near phobic reaction. But Zachary hasn’t smiled since his father left, and she’s desperate to make him happy (and doing nothing and hoping for the best hasn’t been working). She reluctantly enters a new world of youth competitive sports, full of overzealous coaches with Vince Lombardi dreams and fanatical parents trying to achieve vicarious glory.

Unexpectedly, Autumn begins transforming within this strangely addictive new culture, finding her voice, facing her past, tackling her fears…and uncovering the secret that’s been keeping her from her son. After meeting her ideal catch, she finds herself back in the dating game and discovers some fierce competition of her own. Will Autumn make it off the sideline? Can the underdog finally win?

cheer From the Sideline by Amy Avanzino is a book that I so enjoyed reading. I liked the author’s first book, Wake-Up Call, and when I was approached to read the second in her series, I signed up immediately. And then, probably the biggest thing that has happened to me in my time reviewing happened. I was asked to provide a cover blurb!!!! *Pardon me while I die* “FROM THE SIDELINE packs an emotional punch in the best way. Laughter, tears, heartache and joy all combine for a truly touching read.” – 125Pages – is on the Amazon description and everything. And it is all true. While book one was a cute and fun read, this one was a deeper read that I devoured in one sitting and laughed and cried, sometimes within the same chapter.

“It’s not that I’m lazy; I just really prefer doing nothing. I did aspire to do a marathon once, but it was a Sex and the City marathon that involved a make-your-own-sundae bar and several glasses of wine.”

Autumn is a single mother desperately trying to keep her head above water and make her only son Zachary happy. When he decides to join a youth football team, she can only hope he doesn’t make it as sports are most assuredly not her thing. When he does, she finds herself in a whole new world, one that slowly begins to suck her in. With a new group of friends, a hot potential new man and a son who finally seems happy, Autumn should be on cloud nine. However a team can only be on top for so long, and as her life begins to falter, Autumn must decide what is truly best for her family.

From the Sideline had a fresh plot. It is sometimes hard to distinguish one chick-lit book from the pack, but the unique twists really shone through. Amy Avanzino can really write. She can create a vast array of emotions in her words and really elevate the average turn-of-phrase. The pacing had a few small blips, but nothing that distracted from the story as a whole. The world created was solid and I could see where the action was occurring. As I have mentioned, the emotions ran high in this. I could really relate to the characters. The stressed out moms and the feeling of having to put on your best face for the people around you really resonated with me. While there were times I wanted to shake Autumn, I also understood what she was doing.

From the Sideline is one of those books that I will re-read when I am having a down day, as I know I will close the cover with a smile on my face. Amy Avanzino crafted a tale with a fantastic cast, a smart plot and a ton of heart. This is a great beach read, a great rainy day read and a fantastic chilly day tucked inside read.

Favorite lines – “They keep score when they play and at the end of every game someone is always a loser. It’s cruel.” Lainey’s lips purse like she’s smelled something rancid. “I heard that they don’t even give kids trophies at the end of the season.” We all gasp.

  1. This one sounds like fun:). Nice to read a book about a woman whose life has seriously gone awry – and who is faced with the task of picking up the pieces with a child in tow… many of us were in the same boat! And congratulations for getting the book blurb gig:))
