Monthly Wrap-Up – January 2016

Welcome to the end of another month. I can’t believe that January is over already! So, busy does not even begin to describe my month. February is one of my busiest months at work so the lead up is pretty ridiculous, with lots of 12 and 13 hour workdays. I don’t have a day off from January 25th to February 20th, I head to a conference for a week on Tuesday, our annual audit starts the 16th and in between I have a month to close, 5 Personal Finance classes to teach to high school sophomores for Junior Achievement, and a birthday party for my soon to be 11 year old to plan. January leads off the planning for all of this so I have been running around like crazy. Books, as always have been my refuge and being able to see the amazing comments I get and the followers I have makes me love my book reading even more. I am linking to Best of the Bunch, Feed Your Fiction Addiction’s monthly wrap-up and The Book Date’s Month in Review. So check out what I did in January, my top pick and my most anticipated books of the coming month.

I reviewed twenty-five books this month.

  24. [29 Jan] The Ramblers by Aidan Donnelley Rowley ★★★½
  25. [31 Jan] Second House from the Corner by Sadeqa Johnson ★★½

I had four 4 1/2 Star reviews this month. Inception by Bianca Scardoni, Smart Girl by Rachel Hollis, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and The Edge of Nowhere by C.H. Armstrong. While they all had the same star level, they were vastly differed. Three were fun and cute and while great, did not match up to the other in emotional depth. It was an easy decision to announce that my best of January 2016 is …

I loved this book. Cathie’s writing was so vivid and the emotions poured off of the page. So very very good, I didn’t put it down till I shut the cover at 2 a.m. The Edge of Nowhere is one of those books you need to push to the top of your TBR. (Yes, full disclosure I met Cathie thru this book and while she is a delight, it had no baring on my decision as I read the book before we connected.)

So that happened…

Bookish things were at a low for January with my funtastic work schedule, but a few managed to creep in.

This month’s topic for Guest of the month is our most anticipated books for 2016. Claire from Cover to Cover tells us her picks in January’s Guest of the Month Club.

I added four new authors to Author Tuesday. I am now booked until July of 2016. I am stoked this series is going so well and that author’s really seem to love it.

My two book clubs picked the books for February’s reads. They are –

125US of Books

In January the United States of Books series started. I am so excited to do this with my amazing co-bloggers. Check out United States of Books for more info. The US of Books reviewed for January were –

  1. [4 Jan] Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson ★★★★
  2. [11 Jan] United States of Books – Plainsong by Kent Haruf
  3. [18 Jan] United States of Books – The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez
  4. [25 Jan] The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain ★★★★

Author Tuesday is probably the thing I like most about having a book review site. I get to interact with some great authors and help others find out more about them. In January I was lucky enough to host Jenny Bravo and Rachel Hollis. February will bring us Daphne Lamb author of The Girls Guide to the Apocalypse on February 2nd and Sonali Dev author of The Bollywood Bride on February 16.

My most anticipated February releases.

I have twenty-seven reviews scheduled for February. I am currently booked for reviews till mid-May so I have a lot on tap the next few months. Here is a sneak peek at some of the books to be reviewed in February.
