Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about music & books. I did not realize this was the topic when I did my TTT Valentine’s Day freebie last week, so instead of matching books to music again, I decided to go with songs that I think could be books. Emotional and full of depth in an average of three minutes, songs convey so much. If you take the basic premise of a song and expand, you could have a great book. So here are my top ten song to book choices. And yes, I know my music is odd, I do own all of these albums so I hear it from my kids all the time. 🙂
Iris – Sentimental Scar –
You can do anything you want
You can pray till the light was come
Still not find a way to make it better
You can go start a war and win
Ending up right back here again
In time it becomes clearer
Pain is a wonderful emotion
Scariest sea in a world of oceans
Angel from where your fires burn
I say will lead you by the water
Throw your body against the wall
And awaken the fear of your own destruction
I can tell you, I’ve been there man
And pain is a wonderful emotion
Look at your sentimental scars
Look at the shape they’ve left upon your skin
And mind
If you believe what makes you turn around
Is what made you fall apart
All of this fear won’t keep you coming down
Pain is a wonderful emotion
Scariest sea in a world of oceans
Angel from where your fires burn
I say will lead you by the water
Throw your body against the wall
And awaken the fear of your own destruction
I can tell you, I’ve been there man
And pain is a wonderful emotion
Apoptygma Berzerk – Non-Stop Violence –
Come, go, step inside, bring me news from the dying world.
(You thinkers and killers) you’re spreading your disease among us.
Warm sweat, no regret, all you see is the TV set,
while people around you are dying like flies.
Non-Stop Violence. They feed us cascades
of non-believers dying in the sand.
Feeding us with violence, we face the fall of man.
Believe me and catch me if you can.
Believe me and catch me if you can.
Come, go, step inside, bring me news from the dying world.
(You thinkers and killers) you’re spreading your disease among us.
White noise, in your ears, your eyes blink but money talks,
what you need is silence and a positive life. (Not your TV)
Non-Stop Violence
So I took shelter in tomorrow
Tomorrow will bring a brand new day
Think I’ll make it right tomorrow,
think I need more sleep today.
Lets make peace again tomorrow,
I need a will to stay away.
I guess I’ll always hate tomorrow
until it’s far away, away.
Cursive – After the Movies –
After the movies
In the parking lot
We stared so long
And you kissed me
With ripe young breath
So I kissed you
One night as forever
In the movies
Well, they never had it so good
One moment
So infinite
On soft wet lips
And I miss you
Are you glad I’m finally gone?
I’m so sorry to hear that
I’m so sorry
I’m so sorry
Have I hurt you?
I have hurt myself
These sad songs won’t change anything
Love as fragile as a wineglass
It should have been forever
Love as fragile as a wineglass
It couldn’t last forever
I’m so sorry
It couldn’t last forever
I remember how we kissed
One night as forever
Jawbreaker – Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault –
I went to a party last night.
What sick things I saw.
Makeout sessions and bicycle messengers,
Punks and art school dropouts.
I ran into this guy I knew
But hadn’t seen in years.
We went into the neon kitchen and stole a couple beers.
He said his girl had dumped him
But there was another guy.
He said that he still liked her.
All I could say was,
“Why, why, oh why, oh why,
Why is it always like this?
Either you’re too mean, or you’re too nice.”
He said, “I even cooked her breakfast.”
So we went into the living room.
Someone was blasting Zeppelin.
It sounded good.
I felt ashamed.
I knew every drum fill.
Anyway, there she sat,
Totally kissing this guy.
They looked good, I mean like in love.
Then I remembered my friend.
He said, “How could you do this?
You said that you needed your space.
He’s wearing the shirt that I gave you.”
Then she said, “Why, why, oh why, oh why,
Why are you always like this?
If I’m having fun then it’s breaking your heart.
Besides, you said I could have it.”
Then the cops showed up.
Nerf Herder – Sorry
Sorry we broke up, sorry I missed you
Sorry I wanted only to kiss you
Sorry I promised to love you forever
Made you feel guilty, oh when you left me
Sorry I showed up at your party
Sorry I drank up all the Bacardi
Sorry I puked up on your bedspread
Sorry I wanted to be your boyfriend again
What can I do?
It’s over, it’s over, it’s over
What can I do? I am the loser
Sorry I saw you and I heard birds sing
Sorry I touched you and I heard bells ring
Sorry I jacked off outside of you window
While you were sleeping
I thought you’d never know
Sorry I showed up at your wedding
Sorry I tried so hard to get in
Sorry I screwed up your picture
Sorry I had sex with your sister
What can I do?
It’s over, it’s over, it’s over
What can I do? I am the loser
Sorry we broke up, sorry I missed you
Sorry I wanted only to kiss you
Sorry I promised to love you forever
Made you feel guilty, oh when you left me
Sorry I showed up at your dinner
Sorry I said those things to you father
Sorry I crashed throught your window on acid
Sorry I made a mess, sorry I bled to death
What can I do?
It’s over, it’s over, it’s over
What can I do? I am the loser
The Cure – Letter to Elise –
Oh Elise it doesn’t matter what you say
I just can’t stay here every yesterday
Like keep on acting out the same
The way we act out
Every way to smile
Forget
And make-believe we never needed
Any more than this
Any more than this
Oh Elise it doesn’t matter what you do
I know I’ll never really get inside of you
To make your eyes catch fire
The way they should
The way the blue could pull me in
If they only would
If they only would
At least I’d lose this sense of sensing something else
That hides away
From me and you
There’re worlds to part
With aching looks and breaking hearts
And all the prayers your hands can make
Oh I just take as much as you can throw
And then throw it all away
Oh I throw it all away
Like throwing faces at the sky
Like throwing arms round
Yesterday
I stood and stared
Wide-eyed in front of you
And the face I saw looked back
The way I wanted to
But I just can’t hold my tears away
The way you do
Elise believe I never wanted this
I thought this time I’d keep all of my promises
I thought you were the girl always dreamed about
But I let the dream go
And the promises broke
And the make-believe ran out
Oh Elise it doesn’t matter what you say
I just can’t stay here every yesterday
Like keep on acting out the same
The way we act out
Every way to smile
Forget
And make-believe we never needed
Any more than this
Any more than this
Depeche Mode Blasphemous Rumors –
Girl of 16
Whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists
Bored with life
Didn’t succeed
Thank the lord
For small mercies
Fighting back the tears
Mother reads the note again
16 candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame
It’s always the same
She goes down on her knees
And prays
I don’t want to start
Any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s
Got a sick sense of humour
And when I die
I expect to find Him laughing
Girl of 18
Fell in love with everything
Found new life
In Jesus Christ
Hit by a car
Ended up
On a life support machine
Summer’s day
As she passed away
Birds were singing
In the summer sky
Then came the rain
And once again
A tear fell
From her mother’s eye
Wolfsheim – Once In A Lifetime –
It’s getting dark too soon
A threatening silence
Surrounding me
A wind comes up from the islands
When distance fades to stormy gray
Washed out from the deep of the ocean
Here I will stand to face your wrath
While all the others are praying
Calm down my heart, don’t beat so fast
Don’t be afraid just once in a lifetime
Calm down my heart, don’t beat so fast
Don’t be afraid just once in a lifetime
No rain can wash away my tears
No wind can soothe my pain
You made me doubt, you made me fear
But now I’m not the same
You took my wife, my unborn son
Torn into the deep of the ocean
I don’t pretend that I love you
‘Cause there is nothing left to loose
And when silence comes back to me
I find myself feeling lonely
Standing here on the shores of destiny
I find myself feeling lonely
I had a life to give, many dreams to live
Don’t you know that you’re losing so much this time
Beyond the waves, I will be free
While all the others are praying
Calm down my heart, don’t beat so fast
Don’t be afraid just once in a lifetime
Calm down my heart, don’t beat so fast
Don’t be afraid just once in a lifetime
No rain can wash away my tears
No wind can soothe my pain
You made me doubt, you made me fear
But now I’m not the same
You took my wife, my unborn son
Torn into the deep of the ocean
I don’t pretend that I love you
‘Cause there is nothing left to loose
The love in you, it does not burn
There is no lesson you can learn
And there are sounds you cannot hear
And there are feelings you can’t feel
Calm down my heart, don’t beat so fast
Don’t be afraid just once in a lifetime
I don’t pretend that I love you
And this time I’m not scared of you
Conjure One – Center of the Sun –
Young girl in the market, music to the men
When the men leave her eyes are red
When her eyes are closed again
She sees the dark market of above
And she sings
They say the most horrible things
But I hear violins
When I close my eyes
I am at the center of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
Young boy in the market follows all the men
When the men leave he’s out of his head
When his eyes are closed again
He sees the dark market of above
And he sings
They break the most beautiful things
But I hear violins
When I close my eyes
I am at the center of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
I look into your eyes
And I am at the center of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
Center of the sun
Young boy in the market
Sees the girl alone and asks her
“Have you lost your way home?”, she sings
“You say the most beautiful things, just like my violins”
I look into your eyes
I am at the center of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
When I close my eyes
I am at the center of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
‘Cause I hear violins
I hear violins
I hear violins
I hear violins
Center of the sun
I hear violins
Evil’s Toy – Under the White Waves –
I try to forget
Memories and distances
The salty and the wet
Loving all her frequencies
Something’s living in the blue
I can remember
No plant, no fish
Is it true?
A human fish deep in the blue
Visiting the waterworld
Under the white waves
Glaring colours
Secret light
Diving in caves
Picking up a sign to reach
Enjoy the silence
Time to meet reality
Prisoned in her frequency
Discovering blue areas
Longing for a secret wish
Is this the creature
I’m looking for?
Deep in the blue
Under the white waves
Find the mermaids
In holy caves
So that is my list of ten songs that could totally be made into books. What are your top picks?
Check out more Top Ten Tuesday at The Broke and the Bookish.
Such a good list! Going to have to give them all a listen to later! Especially love Wolfsheim “Once in a Lifetime”! I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that remembered that song and it was so good!
I love reading lyrics! It’s one of my favourite things to do! I have to admit that I’m not familiar with many of the artists, but I’m loving the lyrics of the songs.

Some of these are new to me. But so happy to see The Cure. Love them so much!! Great list!
Grace @ Rebel Mommy Book Blog recently posted…Top Ten Books and Music
So much is done to words in songs for the sake of the music that I generally find songs insipid. Wish there were more amazing songs that could be made into stories. But, at least for now, I’ll keep my music lyrics away from my books.
